The Transport and Infrastructure Statistics Section is tasked with generating reliable data on road networks, air and sea transport, public transportation, and construction activities. These statistics support infrastructure development, urban planning, and trade facilitation across Somalia.
The section monitors road infrastructure by assessing the extent and conditions of paved roads, as well as measuring vehicle traffic and cargo haulage volumes. In the aviation sector, the section collects data on air traffic, including passengers and cargo flights, and monitors airport operations such as runway status and flight delays. Maritime transport statistics cover port activity, including ship arrivals, cargo handling, and fishing vessel traffic.
The section also tracks public transport usage in urban areas, such as buses, taxis, and motorcycles, and compiles transport safety data by recording crashes and fatalities. Additionally, it collects information on infrastructure investment, including public and private sector spending on construction and sources of funding. To support housing and construction sector analysis, the section produces a Residential Property Price Index (RPPI) that monitors trends in urban property prices, as well as Construction Input Price Indices (CIPI) that track the cost of materials such as cement, steel, and labour prices.
