The FSNSS is responsible for producing high-quality data and insights on food availability, accessibility, utilisation, and stability to inform efforts aimed at reducing hunger and malnutrition. The section conducts regular assessments and monitors key trends using tools such as early warning systems, vulnerability mapping, and nutrition surveillance, supporting both humanitarian actions and long-term development planning. The section collects and analyses data on food market trends, agricultural production, and malnutrition indicators such as Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM), Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), and micronutrient deficiencies.
The early warning systems leverage satellite imagery, rainfall monitoring, and market signals to forecast food insecurity and issue alerts to inform timely response. Additionally, FSNSS monitors maternal and child nutrition outcomes—including tracking rates of wasting, stunting, and anaemia—and evaluates the effectiveness of targeted nutrition interventions and public health programmes.
