UPDATE ON FOOD AND NUTRITION SECURITY CRISIS RISKS JULY 2024 – REPORT #1

The Joint Monitoring Report (JMR) for Somalia, which uses data up to April 2024 and statistical modeling to highlight food and nutrition security risks at the district level, recorded 56 critical and 56 heightened risk alerts1 in April and estimated that 620,000 people (3.31% of the population) lived in areas at risk of deteriorating into Emergency (IPC Phase 4) or worse food insecurity conditions across several regions.

The five regions with the highest risk of experiencing food and nutrition security deterioration were Galgaduud, Gedo, Sanaag, Togdheer, and Woqooyi Galbeed. The ten districts with the highest risk were Beledxaawo, Berbera, Cabudwagg, Ceel Afweyn, Ceel Buur, Ceeriggabo, Doolow, Garbahaarrey, Hargeysa, and Lasqorey.

Somalia Gross Domestic Product (GDP) 2023

The annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) statistics are key indicators of Somalia’s economy and its growth in recent years, providing estimates of expenditure levels and growth across the economy. Much effort has been made to secure new sources of data and improve the quality of data from existing sources, the estimates presented in this report were compiled to the best extent in accordance with the System of National Accounts, (SNA 2008). The 2008 SNA is the internationally agreed standard set of recommendations to compile measures of economic activity in accordance with strict accounting conventions based on economic principles. The accounting framework of the SNA allows economic data to be compiled and presented in a format that is designed for purposes of economic analysis, decision-making, policy formulation, and international comparisons using standard definitions and classifications.

The use of the expenditure approach in the constant 2022 prices dataset is one of the first steps towards transforming the data collected via the Somalia Integrated Household Budget Survey. The National Accounts estimate in this report summarizes the latest economic developments of 2023. This publication shows time series data of 2018-2023. The base year for the Somalia’s National Accounts have been updated from 2017 to 2022.

SNBS Annual Report 2023

As the Somalia National Bureau of Statistics presents the 2023 Annual Report, deep gratitude is extended to the dedicated individuals whose exceptional efforts have shaped this comprehensive document.

In 2023, SNBS played a pivotal role in contributing to evidence-based decision-making, offering data into crucial indicators such as GDP, CPI, trade statistics, Governance Statistics, the first Somali Voluntary National Report (VNR) in 2022, Gender Statistics and Poverty Reports, the Household Budget Survey, as well as the Launch of the Housing and Population Census in May 2023 and the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey. Further, the launch of the Second National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS2). All of these statistical achievements enriched the policymaking landscape in Somalia.

Somalia National Bureau of Statistics Launches National Disability Report and Women & Men Facts & Figures

Mogadishu, Somalia – March 14, 2024 – The Somalia National Bureau of Statistics (SNBS), through the Somali Integrated Statistics and Economic Planning Capacity Building Project (SISEPCB P171160), launched two important reports today: the National Disability Report and the 3rd Women and Men Facts and Figures.

The launch event, held at the Decale Hotel in Mogadishu, saw over 100 participants, including representatives from government ministries (Ministry of Women, National Disability Agency), Members of Parliament, civil society organizations, the World Bank (WB), UN Women, UNDP, academia, media, and other national and international stakeholders.

The reports were produced using data from the Somali Integrated Household Budget Survey 2022 and developed collaboratively with relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Women and the National Disability Agency.

The program kicked off with presentations on the key findings of each report:

Said Abdilahi Abdi, Director of Population and Social Statistics Directorate, presented the Summary of Key Findings of Disability Statistics Report.

Mohamed Abdinur Mohamed, Project Coordinator for SISEPCB and Senior Statistician, presented the Summary of Key Findings of Women and Men Facts and Figures.

Following the presentations, insightful remarks were delivered by:

Dr. Sayed Sadiq, UN Women’s Country Program Manager, Somalia

Dr. Fartun Ali Abdirahman, General Secretary, National Disability Agency

Hon. Nadra Saleh Abdi, Chair, Parliamentary Sub-committee on Social Service Development, House of People (SSDC)

The event concluded with closing remarks by Sharmarke Farah, Director General of the Somalia National Bureau of Statistics.

These reports provide valuable data and insights on the status of women and people with disabilities in Somalia, which will be crucial for informing policy decisions and programs aimed at promoting gender equality and social inclusion.
